Love Letters of Albert Camus and Maria Casarès

It is a big event in Paris and beyond that the love letters of Albert Camus and Maria Casarès have now been published in a 1269-page volume entitled simply Correspondance: 1944 – 1959.  The letters, which begin during Occupation and end four days before Camus’s tragic death in 1960, provide a new and true window on Camus’s passionate 12-year relationship with the great young Spanish-born actress of the French stage, but they go deeper too, catching Camus in his daily life in his own words, his needs and solitude.  They are luminous, enlightening  and sad too, as much a story as a memoire.
