A former staff member at The New Yorker, Hawes has contributed Talk of the Town and Reporter pieces to that magazine, and essays and reviews to The New York Times Magazine and Sunday Book Review, Vogue, the Nation, and various other publications. In 2016, she wrote a series of pieces on downtown New York for the New York Times opinionater blog called Paper Cuts, and she writes regularly for The Martha’s Vineyard Magazine.
